EXIM BANK BUILDS LAVATORY
FACILITY TO KILKALA PRIMARY SCHOOL

Lavatory

Dar es Salaam, August 13, 2014. Exim Bank Tanzania has handed over a modern lavatory facility to Kilakala Primary School in Temeke District, Dar es Salaam in efforts to uplift sanitation condition in the school and improving the learning environment.

The construction of a 10 holes latrine and a good water system is part of several development projects implemented and fully funded by Exim bank Tanzania at Kilakala School which the bank adopted in 2012.
Speaking during the handover ceremony at the school premises yesterday, the Exim Bank Retail Cluster Head, Agnes Kaganda, said her bank decided to support the project with the knowledge of how important hygiene is to the health of pupils and teachers and how it can affect academic performance of a school.

“The school had a latrine with only eight (8) holes against 2739 pupils. Now that the bank has added another 10 holes, we are sure that this will be a relief to both teachers and pupils at this school,” she said.
She said that apart from the 10 holes latrine, boys also have a urinal pit with running water which keeps that pit always clean.

“We believe that, improving the school’s hygiene will lead to preventing pupils especially females from skipping classes so as to find lavatory facilities or pupils contacting epidemic diseases. This will definitely help them to be more focused on their studies, hence upgrading their level of performance in class,” said Ms. Kaganda.

She reiterated that it was now up to the school’s management and the school community to ensure that the facility is used properly to increase its life span so as to serve other pupils who might join the school in future.

“I would like to urge the school’s administration and the pupils to make sure that this lavatory facility is well maintained by keeping it clean. This goal can be achieved only if we will keep the latrines clean,” she added.

She mentioned that Exim Bank has been gradually transforming the school after its adoption, whereby the school now enjoys the use of a state of the art library, all pupils sit on desks donated by the bank, the school has a good clean water system, just to mention a few. All these initiatives are funded by the bank as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities.

On his part, the school head teacher, Mr. Abdul Kuratasa applauded the Exim Bank’s efforts toward the school’s welfare since its adoption saying that pupils at Kilakala primary school now enjoys using modern facilities like their counterparts in modern private schools.

He said that the bank’s donation of lavatory facility is one of the gestures that should be emulated by other companies so as to improve the sector of education in the country.

“I would like to thank the bank’s continuing efforts toward making sure we improve our school’s studying environment. The bank’s commitment towards the school’s welfare has been tremendous since it adopted the school in August 2012.

“We would like to thank the bank for the lavatory facility and promise that the facility will be well managed so that it can be sustained for future pupils,” said Mr. Kuratasa.
